Makeup Must-Haves to Add to Your Collection This Fall

Now that the air is becoming crisper, the leaves are starting to change, and the sun is setting earlier, many of us are preparing for autumn. We take out the fall decor, put away our flip flops, and bring out the boots. But what about our makeup? Just like everything else, makeup trends, styles, and colors change from season to season.

Makeup tends to be dewy and more natural in the summer, while being darker and more dramatic in the winter. In the fall, makeup looks are typically slightly bumped up from the summer. Dark eye makeup and lips become popular. Colors shift from pinks and corals, to deeper shades of oranges, purples, and browns. The following are products I recommend adding to your collection this fall.

Beautycounter's Cheeky Clean Cream Blush "Paloma"

1. A Dark Orange Blush

When thinking of fall, the color orange typically comes to mind. This is why an orange shade of blush is perfect for this time of the year. Applying an orange shade of blush adds warmth to the skin, acting like a bronzer.

If you have a fair complexion, going with a lighter apricot or peachy orange would suit you best. For those with darker skin tones, choosing a red-orange or a sunset orange would warm up the skin. One of my favorite blushes at the moment is Beautycounter's Cheeky Clean Cream Blush in "Paloma." It is a beautiful warm apricot blush that gives my face the perfect amount of color.

*Pro Tip: Using a cream blush in the fall and winter months is a great idea if you prefer a dewy/hydrated look that the cold weather may take away. Using powders dry out the skin, which is typically not needed around this time of the year.

2. Warm Eyeshadow Palettes

Sticking with an autumn color palette, using warm eyeshadows is a perfect way to transition your makeup looks into the fall season. Warm colors include reds, yellows, oranges, and browns that have a ruddy undertone. Golds are another go-to shade of eyeshadow for this season.

I highly recommend the Urban Decay Naked Heat Eyeshadow Palette and/or Morphe's 25B Eyeshadow Palette. Both palettes include a range of shades from light tans, to warm browns, to deep reds and oranges, and golds, making them ideal when creating a gorgeous fall makeup look.

As a professional makeup artist, I find that warm shades of eyeshadow are usually more flattering and universal than cool tones. These shades brighten up the eyes, and make every eye color pop. Cool shades can also have this effect when used correctly, but they are a bit more difficult to work with, as the blue and purple undertones can be less flattering on most people.

3. Cream Shadows

Beautycounter, Stila, & Charlotte Tilbury Liquid & Cream Eyeshadows

Not a fan of eyeshadow palettes? Or do you struggle when applying eye makeup? If you're in need of a quick and easy way to bump up your makeup this season, I would recommend purchasing a liquid eyeshadow.

My top three liquid and cream eyeshadows are Beautycounter's Lid Glow Cream Eyeshadow in "Flash," Stila's Shimmer & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow in "Vivid Smoky Quartz," and Charlotte Tilbury's Eyes to Mesmerize Cream Eyeshadow in "Amber Gold." I prefer to stick with bronzy golds, and warm browns on myself this time of the year, so these shades are perfect.

Although they look intimidating, cream and liquid shadows are super easy to apply. Simply use the applicator, or a brush or finger to swipe the product onto the lid, then pat out the shadow using your finger to blend in the product. And just like that, you've created a beautiful eye makeup look in only a few seconds!

4. A Dark Lipstick

If you could only make one change to your makeup routine in the fall, I'd recommend you swap your light nude and bright pink lipsticks out for darker and deeper shades. Burnt oranges, deep reds, dark browns, and plum purples are best.

Kylie Cosmetics makes a lip kit in the shade "Dirty Peach" which is the perfect shade when transitioning from summer to fall. Mac's Love Me Lipstick in "E for Effortless" is a gorgeous deep red, while Beautycounter's Color Intense Lipstick "9 to5" is a perfect dark mauve. For those who are a bit bolder with their cosmetics, L'oréal's 707 Matte-jestic Lipstick is a stunning eggplant purple. Having a dark lip will not only elevate your makeup overall, but it's also a fun way to incorporate the season into your look.

5. A Classic Nude Lip Liner & Gloss Combo

Beautycounter's Beyond Gloss "Spice"

Whether you're bold enough to apply a dark lipstick or not this season, it's always a good idea to have a go-to nude lip combination on hand. For everyday wear, I recommend a lipliner paired with a gloss, as it's a bit more natural, and can be touched up easily throughout the day.

In the fall, I prefer nudes with a brown undertone, as opposed to nudes with a pink undertone. Beautycounter's Beyond Gloss "Spice" is a lovely warm, neutral gloss with a bit of shimmer.

Mac "Whirl" & Juvia's Place "So Rare" Lip Liners

As for lip liners, Mac Cosmetic's "Whirl" Lip Liner Pencil is a staple in the beauty community. The Juvia's Place Lux Lip Liner in "So Rare" is another perfect golden muted brown to use as a base for your lips.

*Pro Tip: Instead of using your lip liner to solely outline the shape of your lips, try using it all over the lips, filling them in completely. Using your lip liner as if it were a lipstick will create an even base to place your lip gloss overtop.

Hopefully these recommendations provided you with some inspiration for your makeup this fall. At the end of the day, the best thing about makeup is that it has NO rules. You can experiment with any products, shades, or techniques you'd like. That being said, wear that black lipstick in the summer, and the barbie pink eyeshadow in the winter if that is what makes you happy! These are simply my tips for this fall season.
